How Do I Set the Privacy Settings for My Network?

Updated this week

If your settings don't look like the ones below, check out this article

You can control how people find, join, and participate in your Mighty Network. The different combinations of the three options below support a variety of use cases—from open communities to exclusive, gated experiences.

Network-Level Privacy & Access

To configure your Network’s privacy, go to Admin > Privacy & Access and decide the following:

1. How Do People Join Your Network?

Access to your Network will be set to one of the following:

  • Accessible Through Plans

  • Invite-Only

  • Anyone Can Join

Every new Mighty Network is set to Invite-Only by default because you haven’t created any plans yet and aren’t ready for members.

However, most Hosts set up plans for their Network because plans offer the most options and flexibility for how different groups of people join.

Use plans if you want to require people to do one or more of the following to join:

  • Pay

  • Answer questions

  • Request approval

They also allow you to offer access to the Network and Spaces in a single flow.

Once you create a plan that includes the Network and make it active (by selecting at least one place for it to appear or creating plan share links), then the Network becomes Accessible Through Plans. Going forward, anyone invited to the Network must join via a plan to become a member.

If you decide not to use plans, you must choose one of the following:

  • Keep your Network set to Invite-Only

    • This option is best if you want to tightly control access to your Network by only allowing people with an invite (one-time or multiple-use) to join, which does not require them to answer questions, request approval, or pay.

  • Set your Network so that Anyone Can Join without restrictions

    • This option is best if you want your Network open to anyone to join without being invited, answering questions, requesting approval, or paying.

    • We don’t recommend this option for most Networks since it means anyone on the Internet can join and participate.

2. Who Can View Content Inside Your Network?

You can control who can see member profiles, visible Collections, and Spaces that allow anyone to see they exist.

Select one of the following options:

  • Anyone (including visitors and members who aren't logged in)

    • This option is best for Networks that are Accessible Through Plans, as you can gate access while allowing some parts of the Network to be available for people on the Internet to preview and explore before joining and participating.

  • Only logged-in members

    • This option is best for Networks that want only members to be able to view content inside the Network.

3. Who Can Find Your Network?

You can control who can search for and see that your Network exists.

Select one of the following options:

  • Anyone

    • Your Network appears in Mighty’s search and app discovery and can be indexed by search engines.

    • This option is best if you want your Network to be easily found by prospective members.

  • Only people who are invited

    • Your Network is hidden from Mighty’s search and app discovery, and cannot be indexed by search engines.

    • This option is best if you don’t want anyone to find the Network beyond those who are invited.

Who Can Invite People to Join Your Network?

Select one of the following options:

  • Any Network member

  • Only Network Hosts and moderators

If you want your members to have access to the Ambassador Program, your Network must allow any Network member to invite other members.

This setting has the greatest impact on Networks set to Invite-Only since it allows members to invite people who can then join the Network without restrictions.

An invitation to a Network set to Accessible Through Plans requires the invitee to join via a plan that has been visible. The invitation alone does not allow the member to join. We recommend that Hosts use Plan Share Links instead of the invite feature.

An invitation to a Network set to Anyone CanJoin allows members to join without restrictions, as the Network is already open to anyone.

Search Engine Indexing

The option to adjust search engine indexing is available when you have your Network set so that anyone can search for and see that the Network exists.

If the landing page is enabled, you can decide if you want search engines to index the landing page.

If you allow anyone to see the content inside your Network (including member profiles, visible Collections, and Spaces that allow anyone to see they exist), you can decide if you want search engines to index this content.

When your Network is set so that only invited members can find it, the landing page and content will not be indexed by search engines.

Note: Networks with Single Sign-On (SSO) enabled cannot use granular privacy settings at the Network level. However, Hosts can still configure individual Space privacy settings.
