How Do I Gate Access to All or Parts of My Mighty Network?

Updated this week

Plans offer the most options and flexibility for gating access to your Mighty Network, Spaces, or both.

Use plans if you want to require people to do one or more of the following when joining:

  • Pay (Payments gate)

  • Answer questions (Screening Questions gate)

  • Request approval (Approval gate)

You can set where Plans appear for people to join, or choose to make them accessible by a link only and share with specific groups of people.

Choose Your Gates

Question and approval gates can be added to any plan and are valuable for screening potential members and gathering information about them at signup. Learn more about setting up screening questions and approval here.

For the rest of this article, we’ll focus primarily on setting up payment gates for your Network and Spaces, and the Privacy & Access Settings you’ll pair with them.

But first, regardless of which option you choose, know that you can always:

  • Create Spaces set so that anyone in the network can view content inside and Anyone Can Join (meaning all Network members), and consider making these Spaces Auto Join if you want all Network members to join them.

  • Create Spaces that are only accessible to select Network members by keeping those Spaces set to Invite-Only or creating a hidden plan with no payment gate and setting the Spaces so that only logged-in Space members can see they exist.

  • Offer limited memberships by creating a subscription plan that includes only access to Space(s) and not the Network. This option is ideal for setting up a value journey, standalone courses, or a lead magnet that funnels into full Network access.

  • Set up one-time purchase plans that only include access to Spaces, which means members keep access to these Spaces regardless of whether they are also on a plan that includes the Network.

Recommended Option #1

Screen for Access to the Network, Then Charge for Subscription Access to Spaces

This option will work best for most Networks.

How to Set Up Your Network

1. Require approval to join the Network

  • Create a plan with an approval gate (but no payment gate) that includes the Network and set it to appear on your Network Landing Page. This helps protect against bad actors and spammers joining your Network.

2. Decide who can view content inside your Network

  • To help people get a sense of what’s inside your Network, including any plans they can purchase later, set your Network to Anyone can view content inside. People will be able to see all plans that appear on visible Collections and Space About Pages.

  • Alternatively, if you don’t want people to be able to preview your content or any plans on visible Collections and Space About Pages, you can set your Network so that Only logged-in members can view content inside. Then, decide if you want to promote plans that include only Spaces on your Network Landing Page.

How to Set Up Your Spaces

1. Charge for access to Spaces

  • Create plans with subscription payment gates that include access to a Space or bundle of Spaces, but not the Network.

  • Set these plans to appear on the Collection and Space About Pages.

  • Note:

    • Anyone who leaves their plan granting access to the Network will retain access to these Spaces as limited members.

    • Anyone who joins only these plans that include access to Spaces (i.e. who doesn’t also have access to your Network through another plan) will be a limited member.

    • To prevent the above two scenarios from occurring and ensure that everyone who joins any plan is a full Network member, include the Network in your plans. Then, you can decide if you want these plans to appear on the Network Landing Page in addition to the Collection and Space About Pages.

2. Allow anyone to find and see your gated Spaces

  • Set your payment-gated Spaces so that Anyone in the Network can see them, ensuring people can easily find and purchase access.

3. Decide who can view content inside your gated Spaces

  • If you want people to be able to preview the content of a Space before purchasing access, set the Space to Anyone in the Network can view content inside. Keep in mind that if you choose this option and your Network is also set to Anyone can view content inside, then visitors can also see inside the Space.

Recommended Option #2

Charge for Subscription Access to Your Network

This is the simplest way to structure your Network and plans, and it offers options for expansion later on.

How to Set Up Your Network

1. Create a plan with a subscription payment gate that only includes the Network.

2. Set the Network so that Only logged-in members can view content inside.

  • Alternatively, you can set your Network to Anyone can view content inside. However, this means that visitors will also be able to see inside any Spaces set to Anyone can see this Space and Anyone in the Network can view content inside.

How to Set Up Your Spaces

1. Set your Spaces to Anyone Can Join and Anyone can see this Space so that members can choose which Spaces they want to join. Make these Spaces Auto Join if you want all Network members to join them automatically.

2. Later, if you want to expand on this structure, you can:

  • Create plans that only include Spaces and not the Network, then offer them to Network members and/or as limited memberships. This is perfect if you want to create a home for your lead magnet or offer a standalone course that both limited members and full Network members can access.

  • Create plans that include your Spaces and the Network for new members to purchase directly from your Network's landing page, and/or for existing members to have the option to move across plans as they upgrade or downgrade without paying for the Network twice or losing access to it.

A Few Notes on Limited and Full Membership Plans:

  • A member can be on multiple plans that include the Network (full membership plans) and multiple plans that do not include the Network (limited membership plans) at the same time.

  • Any plan that includes the Network is a full membership plan and will be available to join as long as it’s visible somewhere (on the Network Landing Page, Network About Page, Collection Page, or Space About Page) or a person has access to the plan through an invite to the plan or a plan share link.

  • Any Plan that does not include the Network is a limited membership plan and will be available to join as long as it’s visible somewhere (on the Network Landing Page, Collection Page, or Space About Page) or a person has access to the plan through an invite to the plan or a plan share link.

Just remember: If you do not want to offer limited memberships, then every plan you create must include the Network.
