How Do I Build a Course in My Mighty Network?

Once you've enabled Courses, you can build your first Course.

You can add multiple images, videos and media, and file attachments within each Lesson, Section, or even in your Overview. You can also upload video directly into your Course.

3 Quick Steps to Get Started

From Courses, use the + button to create a new Course.

By default, a new Course is set to Secret and your Course Materials – the Overview, Lessons, and Sections – are set to Hidden. This lets you create your Course Materials privately and share them when you're ready

On the first Create Course page, you'll choose your Course Title, Tagline, Description, Privacy Level, branding, and more details. Click the Next button in the top right-hand corner to continue creating your Course.

The second screen is the Course Structure. Here you'll be able to rename your Table of Contents, Lessons, and Sections. Click Next again and on the third setup screen, you'll get the option to rename your Instructors.

Now that your Course has been created, you'll be prompted with three options:

  1. Charge for Access
  2. Invite People to Join
  3. View the Course

Go to View the Course to add your Course Materials and adjust your Course Settings.

There are 3 Types of Courses You Can Create

There are three types of Courses you can create on a Mighty Network:

  1. A "Content-Only" Course. You can offer just Course Content and materials with no community or comments by turning off your Course Activity Feed.
  2. A Course with a Dedicated Community. This is the default Course you create. It has both the Table of Contents (course materials) and Activity Feed (course community) enabled.
  3. A "Live" Course. This option puts the Activity Feed (course community) front and center. It's a great option for creating a Course live with a small group of students, adding Course materials as you go.

To set up each of these options, go to General Settings

Scroll down to Course Details.

You'll see that your Course Activity Feed is on by default.

The Activity Feed is a powerful course community. It gives you the same feature options you have with your main Mighty Network – Quick Posts, Articles, Polls and Questions, Events, and Topics – but only available to the members of a specific Course.

As members join and participate in your Course, they will see Course activity in this Course Activity Feed, as well as their Course activity in their main Mighty Network Activity Feed.

To create a "Content-Only" Course, turn OFF the Course Activity Feed. You'll remove the Activity Feed from the left navigation and your Course will have no dedicated community.

If you Default to the Course Activity Feed "on," your members will land on the Course Activity Feed, not the Table of Contents when they click into your Course. This set up means that you can run a Live Course, creating course materials live with your students as you go. We share more details at the end of this article.

Add Your Course Materials

You have three content types to build your Course:

  • An Overview
  • Lessons
  • Sections

Add an Overview

Start with an Overview. It's the description of and guidelines for your Course. We have a pre-built Overview template for you to publish as-is or edit and make your own.

Then, at the bottom of your Overview page, you'll see Overview Settings.

For any Lesson or Section, you can see whether the page is Visible or Hidden (each area is Hidden by default), whether the thumbnail image is the default or one you've customized, and whether you are enabling previewing. To change these settings, choose Manage Overview Settings.

From here, you can add your next lesson and keep building out Lessons and Sections.

Add a Lesson

A Lesson has the same features as an Article in your Mighty Network. You can add a video, photos, files, and embed some widgets or software.

To add a Lesson, go to Table of Contents > Add Lesson

After you save a Lesson, you'll have the option to:

  • Make it Hidden or Visible
  • Add a Rule for Unlocking (based on finishing the Overview or another Lesson)
  • Add a Completion button
  • Change the Instructor
  • Edit the Thumbnail
  • Choose to Preview to visitors

You'll get to these options from Manage Lesson Settings.

Add a Section

A Section contains Lessons and has the same features as an Article as well. When you add a new Section, you'll be prompted to add Lessons as well as Manage Section Settings.

To add a Section, go to Table of Contents > Add Section

Once you have Lessons and Sections, you'll continue to add new Lessons and Sections from the Table of Contents at the bottom of the page.

After you save a Section, you'll have the option to:

  • Add and/or Re-order Lessons
  • Make it Hidden or Visible
  • Add a Rule for Unlocking (based on finishing the Overview or another Lesson)
  • Add a Completion button
  • Change the Instructor
  • Edit the Thumbnail
  • Choose to Preview to visitors

You'll get to these options from Manage Section Settings for that Section.

Adjust Your Course Settings

You can tweak your Course Settings at any time. Here's a quick overview of some of your options:

Preview the Table of Contents

You can display your Table of Contents to people not yet in your Course. You can also preview Lessons or Sections. This will give people a sense of what material the Course offers. You can also allow previewing of Lesson or Section content by going to each Lesson or Section Settings page.

Privacy and Invites

You can change the privacy level of your Course from secret (the default) to public, private or paid, which means you charge for access

Note that your Mighty Network's overall privacy governs the visibility of any Course or Group within it. For example, if your Mighty Network is private, a public Course will only be public to members of the private Network.

You can also choose to have only Hosts and Moderators invite people to your Course or enable all members to invite. By default, all members can invite.

Invite and Manage Course Members

You have the same Course Member management features that you have in your main Mighty Network. From seeing all members to welcoming and messaging members, and downloading your Course member list.

To invite or manage course members, see our article on invites

The Activity Feed & Course Content Settings

The Course Settings > Course Content applies to the features you enable in The Course Activity Feed. Note: your actual Course materials live in the main Course and are accessed via your Table of Contents.

By default, Quick Posts are enabled, and all other features available to you – Articles, Polls and Questions, Events, Topics, a Welcome and/or Featured Section for your Course – are disabled. You can enable them at any time.

Charge for Access via Get Paid

Lastly, you can set up the option to charge for access to your Course via Course Settings > Get Paid. Learn how to set up Plans.

If You're Starting From Scratch, Use a Live Course

If you're creating your first Course, don't worry about not having enough Course content or materials to get started.

There's a better solution built right into your Course.

Simply Default the Course Activity Feed as your main Course page, invite in a handful of students, and run your first Course "live."

Your Live Course has a simple structure. Each week, you take students through:

  1. A Topic (shared in a live video session via Zoom or Crowdcast)
  2. A Case Study (an example of the topic being applied)
  3. A Challenge (giving your students a challenge for the week)
  4. A Result (getting your students a result each week)

That's it. That's the Course.

You don't need months of proven Course materials with this approach. And your students will love it.

You can start with as few as 5 or 10 people and add your Lesson or Section at the end of the week with video replays from the sessions you run.
