Sending members Course completion certificates gives them tangible proof of their progress. It builds confidence, motivates them to keep going, and deepens engagement in your community.
This article walks you through how to use Zapier to automatically send certificates (or congratulatory messages) to members when they complete a Course.
If you’re not familiar with Zapier, it’s an automation tool that connects different apps so you can create simple workflows between them—no coding required.
Note: You’ll need a paid Zapier account to automate Course completion certificates. This workflow isn’t available on the free Zapier plan.
Using Mighty Automations
You can also use our native Automations feature to show a pop-up when a member completes a Course. This message can include a link where they can download their completion certificate.
Using Zapier
Building the Zap
To automate sending a certificate or completion message after a member finishes a Course, you’ll create a Trigger and an Action in Zapier.
Step 1: Set Up Your Trigger
In Zapier, create a new Zap.
Select Mighty Networks as the Trigger app.
Choose Course Progress Update as the Event.
From here, you’ll configure which Course completion should trigger the Zap, then connect it to whatever tool you’re using to send certificates (for example, email or a certificate app).
Click Continue and connect your Mighty Network in the Account section if you haven’t already.
Then select Close at the bottom of the Trigger box.
Next, select the + icon below the Trigger to add your Action.
Add an Action
For the next step in your Zap, add an Action and select Filter.
Set the filter to:
Progress Percentage → Exactly matches → 100
Setting this filter ensures that the member receives a completion certificate only after they’ve completed 100% of the Course.
Click Continue, then add a new Action by selecting the + icon below the Action box.
Next, choose the app you want to use to generate your Certificate of Completion.
Popular options include Canva, Google Slides, SimpleCert, and Certifier.
Creating a Certificate of Completion Using Google Slides
Start by creating your certificate in Google Slides. Google Slides includes a variety of ready-to-use templates, or you can design your own from scratch.
Once your certificate is ready, return to Zapier and select Google Slides as your Action app.
Choose Create Presentation From Template as the Event.
If your Google account isn’t connected yet, Zapier will prompt you to connect it after you click Continue.
Under the Action settings:
Give your certificate a unique name in the Title of New Presentation field. This title will appear for your members.
If you want members to be able to download their certificate, set Is Shared? to True.
In the Template Presentation dropdown, select the Google Slides file you created for your Certificate of Completion.
Once you’ve completed the setup, click Continue.
Zapier will then create a test certificate in your Google Slides account. This test pulls in sample data from your Trigger App based on how you mapped your fields in Google Slides.
To review it, go to your Google Slides account and open All Slides to find the test certificate.
Modify the Zap to Send the Certificate to Your Members
In the same Zap, add another Action and choose Email by Zapier as the Action app.
Choose Send Outbound Email as the Action Event.
Click Continue, then set up your email template.
In the To field, select the email value from your Trigger using the dropdown menu.
Choose User Email.
Fill in the Subject line with the text you want members to see when they receive their certificate. Then complete the Body of your email.
Tip: Use variables from your Trigger to personalize your message.
In the Attachment field, select your Google Slides Action, then choose the generated certificate file from the dropdown menu.
Complete any additional optional fields, then click Continue to test your Zap.
If you used your own email address in the To field, you’ll receive a test email from your Mighty Network through Zapier Mail.
If you mapped a customer’s email address, Zapier will send the test to that customer’s inbox.
After a successful test, make sure to switch your Zap from Off to On so it runs automatically.
Remember, you can always return to your Zap to update the certificate template or adjust your email message at any time.
Note: If you add or remove Lessons or Sections in your Course, be sure to test your Zap again to confirm it still fires correctly when members reach 100% completion.
What Will My Member Experience?
When your Zap is turned on, Zapier will automatically create and send a certificate to members as soon as they complete your Course.
When a member selects Mark as Complete on the final Lesson, the Zap will fire and they’ll receive their Certificate of Completion right away.
