As part of our Mighty Networks PRO and Enterprise Plans, we now offer Single Sign-On (SSO) to enable a Host to integrate member accounts on their existing service with those on their new Mighty Network.
The benefit of SSO is a unified member experience between a Mighty Network and a Host’s external service. It externalizes account management and profile settings on the Host’s existing service. For this reason, it is also a feature that requires a Host to have an established external service and experienced technical team to ensure the feature works smoothly with minimal troubleshooting on either side.
Requirements for SSO
OAuth2 (https://oauth.net/2) is the industry-standard protocol for authorization used by Facebook Connect and other authentication services today. It’s also what we use for Mighty Networks’ SSO. Learn more about OAuth here.
As an open standard, “OAuth 2.0 supersedes the work done on the original OAuth protocol created in 2006. OAuth 2.0 focuses on client developer simplicity while providing specific authorization flows for web applications, desktop applications, mobile phones, and living room devices.”
For SSO between a Host’s external service and a Mighty Network to work, the Host needs to have a database of members with:
- First and Last Name
- Email Address
- Unique ID for each Member
Optionally, a Host’s external service can also provide:
- “Bio” or text up to 160 characters
Member Location, Member Category, Topics, and any additional question and personal information continues to be handled by their Mighty Network and provided as part of the Downloadable Member List as an Excel file, or accessible via the data pipeline offered as part of our Enterprise Plans.
We require a Host to have an established external service and technical liaison on your team to kick-off SSO and add a cushion of two weeks to any launch timeline to conservatively estimate time to execute.
